Ever heard of a T-shirt made from plastic bottles?

With India playing the global host for World Environment Day (June 5) celebrations themed around beating plastic pollution this year, one indigenous outfit that’s taken things a notch up is Alcis Sports. Since last two years, this a performance wear brand has been making T-shirts using waste plastic bottles.
So, you can buy a Wonder Tee that’s made from eight plastic bottles.
“The idea to create the Wonder Tee and Wonder Polo range was born from the growing need for making environment-friendly products,” says Roshan Baid, the company’s, managing director.
Plastic over polyester
Generally T-Shirts are made of Polyester - a man-made fiber. Its production involves huge quantities of water, chemicals and the use of fossil fuels. Moreover, the raw materials and by-products of polyester are toxic and it pollutes water and air, causing several health hazards.
“That’s why, we thought of using R-PET (Recycled Polyethylene Terephthalate) for our Wonder Tee and Wonder Polo range, which is a strong, durable and recyclable material used for soda bottles, water bottles, food jars etc, making it an environment-friendly, cost-effective and safe product that also performs better than polyester,” adds Baid of Alcis Sports that was incepted nearly two years ago to cater to the growing Indian sportswear market.
Additionally, this breathable garment makes you sweat less, it is anti-odour and very light too. It weights juts 86g!
Besides, renowned cricketer Shikhar Dhawan is the brand ambassador of Alcis Sports as he wants to help further the cause of reducing environment pollution.“Being a fitness freak, I’m always on the lookout for good performance wear. These T-shirts are stylish and very comfortable and being made from recycled plastic makes them worth the money spent too,” says Rehan Khan who recently bought a Wonder Tee online.
Way forward
So, motivated by the success of these T-shirts, the brand is now planning to come up with a kids range too and you can expect to buy some eco-friendly footwear and bags as well.
Be it replacing plastic bags as dustbin liners with those made out of newspapers by or manufacturing of compostable plastics as a replacement for conventional plastic bags, it’s worth noting that several organisations and private players today are doing their bit to reduce the use of plastic as far as possible.
